We are proud to partner with ASSETS After School Enrichment Programs and the BEANS (Better Eating, Activity, and Nutrition for Students) Program to offer gardening and nutrition education to students of the Fort Bragg Unified School District. These dynamic programs engage youth in healthy cooking and eating while teaching them about their connection to the true sources of their food.

BEANS (Better Eating, Activity, and Nutrition for Students) Program: The BEANS Program hires and trains high school students to be peer nutrition educators in their community. They learn about healthy eating and how to prepare nutritious food while incorporating local, seasonal produce. They reach hundreds of kids each school year in KUDOS After Schools Programs at Redwood Elementary, Dana Grey Elementary, and Fort Bragg Middle School where they deliver nutrition lessons each week along with making healthy recipes with the kids. Lessons focus on different topics each week. Each summer BEANS delivers free nutrition classes at Safe Passage Family Resource Center and hands out recipe samples at the Fort Bragg Farmers’ Market. We currently have six teens from Fort Bragg High School in our BEANS Team.

We offer 2 classes to teens at Fort Bragg High School through the ASSETS After School Enrichment Program.

Cooking from the Garden: Students are engaged in harvesting food from the Learning Garden and taking it straight to the cafeteria where they prepare a wide variety of meals focusing on healthy recipes that involve seasonal foods. This class is offered every Wednesday in the Student Union after school from 3:30-5:30.

Feed the School: Students work directly in the Learning Garden to help grow food for their school cafeterias. They participate in garden activities, such as making compost and fertilizing teas, planting seeds and seedlings, weeding, tending to plants and watering. This class takes place every Friday after school at The Learning Garden from 3:30-5:00.

We just hired an amazing group of 6 teens from Fort Bragg High School to be a part of our new BEANS Team. They are so great! This is our 3rd year of running the BEANS Program and we are excited to get it going again. These teens will work throughout the school year teaching younger students in the KUDOS After School Programs in Fort Bragg about healthy eating with a focus on local and seasonal foods. Each week we visit Redwood Elementary, Dana Gray Elementary, and Fort Bragg Middle School to deliver these lessons and make a healthy snack with the kids.

So far we have we have focused our lessons on the basics: the food groups and parts of the plant we eat. The first week we made an apple snack (since apples are in season!) with almond butter, peanut butter, granola and dried fruit. Most kids really loved the almond butter! It’s more nutrient dense than peanut butter. We also made a corn and black bean salad and added a ton of fresh vegetables from The Learning Garden like carrots, red peppers, and kale along with avocado and a lime dressing with a few spices. Everyone loved that too, especially with a little Tapatio for spice!

Stay tuned for more updates on what these great teen peer educators are teaching and eating.
